LED Enhanced Information Sign
SmartPark is a modular enhanced information sign incorporating the latest developments in high performance light emitting diodes (LED’s) and renewable energy sources. The system is designed to relay a fixed message to the target audience when ambient light levels are low. Using ultra-reliable LED’s, batteries and a compact solar panel, the unit is entirely self-contained and has minimal environmental impact SmartPark consists of four primary modules; solar array, controller, battery and sign board.The unit is designed to operate for eight hours per night, throughout the year, in all weather conditions with no scheduled maintenance. All components are designed for a ten year operational life.
Solar Array
The standard array is a 4 Watt, 280mm x 630mm panel. All arrays have the following key features:

The array is mounted south facing using a simple angled bracket system. The panel can be fitted over the top of a standard round pole, or clamped to a vertical object.
The panel is constructed from individual solar cells mounted on a glass reinforced plastic (GRP) substrate and covered in a clear epoxy encapsulant. For aesthetic and fixing purposes, the panel is framed using lightweight aluminium. The result is an extremely robust panel capable of withstanding extremes of weather for years. The panel is a highly visible and attractive item, clearly demonstrating that the system is using a renewable energy source.Should the sign require more power to operate (it may need to operate from dawn to dusk or a power greater number of LED’s), the solar array will be tailored to suit the application.
Electronic Controller
The standard controller will accept all battery types, solar panels, and illuminated signs. The

Battery Pack
The system uses combinations of standard 2 Volt sealed rechargeable batteries. Typical installations will use a 4 Volt battery pack, with 25 Amp Hour capacity. This gives 9 days of uninterrupted
operation with no solar input. An average of 3 hours of sunlight will keep the battery fully charged, if set to the 8 hours ‘on’ option.

The batteries are designed to be maintenance free.
The electronic controller keeps the batteries in optimal condition so extending their life to the maximum.
Sign Board
The sign board is user defined. Typically the sign will be an image, superimposed over a prismatic retro-reflective laminate. This is then stuck to the aluminium or GRP substrate.The LED’s used to enhance the image are mounted in holes drilled through the substrate.The rear of the LED’s are protected by a weatherproof cover and the plate is then mounted using industry standard methods.

The standard retro-reflective material is known as ‘Diamond Grade’. This is used by the sign industry only when the highest standards of reflectivity are demanded. It returns a very high proportion of the illuminating light source at a relatively narrow angle to the viewer, hence delivering exceedingly
high contrast levels even at long range. By combining the LED’s with this material, we are able to achieve optimum sign performance day and night with the lights on or off.
Specifying The Sign Image
The client is able to specify any image and size combination to be illuminated. Experience suggests that simple shapes and letters lend themselves well to LED enhancement. More complex shapes, which are not easily recognised, require more careful positioning of the LED’s and use of colour. T M Safety Signs will advise on the size and configuration of signs taking into account viewing distances, target audience, image type, location and technical challenge.
